I've had several requests to update the goals worksheet from last year. I just posted an undated version here. Happy 2012!
I was released as Activity Days Leader yesterday. My husband and I have been busy planning our move from Denver to Ft. Lauderdale where he began medical school today. I am so sad to be leaving my girls, but I'm looking forward to our new adventure!

I still have several activities and printables that I have not posted yet. I will hopefully get to that once I am settled into our new place. And who knows... maybe I will be called to Activity Days again in my new ward! I guess only time will tell. Regardless, I will continue to post as I can.
First, we told the story of the statue of Christ as told by President Dieter F. Uchtdorf’s April 2010 Conference talk <a href="http://lds.org/general-conference/2010/04/you-are-my-hands?lang=eng&query=my+hands" tareget-?blank?="">You Are My hands and had a brief discussion on what the story meant and how we can become the hands of Jesus Christ.

Our Activity is based on the following Activity from the Faith in God Book: “Learn about and practice good nutrition, good health, and good grooming, including modest dress.” Since we discussed using our hands for good, we decided this would be a good activity to teach the girls how to properly care for their hands and nails… manicures!

Here’s what you need:

Nail Polish Remover

Cotton Balls

Nail Clipper

Emery Board

Hand Lotion

Soap

Water

Bowl or container to soak hands

Hand Towel

2 Washcloths

Nail Polish (optional)

Nail Brush (optional)

Items like nail polish remover, cotton balls, hand lotion, emery boards & soap can be provided pretty inexpensively. You can ask the girls to bring a small Tupperware container, nail clippers, 2 washcloths, a hand towel and some nail polish that they already have at home (although I found that the nail polish ended up being a total mess and took more time than we actually had). That makes this activity $7 or less:

Nail Polish Remover - $1

Emery Boards - $1

Cotton Balls - $1

Hand Lotion - $3 (or less)

Soap - $1

If your budget permits, you could consider putting together manicure kits for the girls. I was able to put together these individual kits for about $2.50 each and the girls loved them! Here’s what I included in a small Ziploc baggie:

Lotion – Bath & Body Works - $1

Emery Boards - Walmart - $.88 for 10

Nail Polish Remover Pads – Minimus.biz - $.05/each

Nail Clippers – Walmart - $.49/each

Nail Brushes – Amazon.com - $.59/each

I also provided hand soap, tupperware containers and nail polish, but those items were not included in the kits. Here’s how we did our manicures:

Set up. Lay out a hand towel and gather the following materials: Cotton Balls, Nail Polish Remover, Nail Clippers, an Emery Board, Lotion, Soap, Small Bowl or container to soak hands, 2 Washcloths, Nail Polish (optional), Nail Brush (optional).

Clean up. Use nail polish remover to get rid of old nail polish. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and if you have a nail brush, use it to get all of the gunk out from under your nails. Sing the “Happy Birthday” Song twice to get your hands really clean.

Trim down. Use nail clippers to trim your nails straight across. Don’t cut your nails too short… make sure you only cut the white part of your nail. Cutting them too short will hurt and may cause bleeding.

Shape up. Use an emery board to shape your nail into an oval shape. Use the emery board in one direction… never back and forth.

Soak down. Fill a small container or bowl with warm water and a little bit of soap. Soak your hands for about 5 minutes. When you’re done, dry your hands on the hand towel.

Moisten up. Squirt a dollop of lotion onto your hands. Massage the lotion into your hands until the most of location is absorbed. Dampen two washcloths in warm water. Wrap each of your hands in a washcloth and relax for 2-3 minutes.

Push down. Gently psuh your cuticles down off your fingernails using one of your damp washcloths. Don't push too hard... just enough to make them look nice.

That’s it! You’re done…

…unless you’d like to paint your nails. If so, here are some tips:

Use nail polish sparingly… a little goes a long way.

Start painting at the base of your nail and go up.

Make sure you give your nails plenty of time to dry.

Have a friend paint your nails, it’s always easier to paint someone else’s nails than your own. You can take turns.

Whenever I am struggling to plan a particular Activity, I can always turn to the Friend for Great ideas. The Activity Day Answer, featured in this month’s friend brought me to tears. Not only did it remind me of my own struggles when I was young, it struck me as a profound lesson to share with our girls.

First, It is so important to teach the girls that our prayers are not just answered by sitting there… we need to act! I’m reminded of this joke the little boy told in the Pursuit of Happyness. How true it is that we don’t always acknowledge the answers the Heavenly Father sends us!

The second lesson here is that we all need to learn to be a good friend. So many times we are afraid of new things… including new people. But it is our job as members of the church to love one another and bear each other’s burdens. This means being a good friend and reaching out to those that we don’t know. This is always a great reminder for young girls!

For my activities, I always plan a short devotional to begin to set a spiritual tone for the activity. This is a wonderful one to use.WendyC303http://www.blogger.com/profile/13969286715622650199noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-551331218675813967.post-55677953517287302182011-01-31T20:24:00.001-07:002011-03-04T15:10:25.391-07:00Valentine’s Day Earrings Service Project

I am excited to share this activity with you, because it was my first ever collaboration! Thank you so much Andi at Hot Pink Pansy Designs for helping me out with this.

This is a super easy craft that my girls LOVED!

Here’s what you need:

Pink, white and red buttons

Novelty heart buttons (I found some fantastic ones in the Valentine’s Section at hobby lobby)

Plain Earring Posts

Regular tacky glue

Qtips

Heart earring boards (print out on cardstock)

Straight pin

Here’s what you do:

Have the girls “Design” several pairs of earrings by pairing plain buttons with the novelty buttons

Using a little bit of glue on a QTip, glue your desired buttons together

Dip the earring post into a little bit of glue and place on the back of the earring.

Let the earrings dry for about 10 minutes

Cut out these cute heart earring boards. Puncture the card at the center of each heart with a straight pin and have the girls add their name at the bottom

Place your earrings on the card through the holes and let them dry over night

Note: A little bit of tacky glue goes a long way. Although the glue dries clear, it still looks messy if you use too much. I encouraged my girls to use the QTips to better manage the glue flow.

I used this project as a service activity to benefit a Denver-area charity called Project Valentine. The charity gathers donations and assembles gift bags to distribute to cancer patients on Valentine’s Day. I thought these earrings would make such a cute addition to their gift bags.

You can use this activity any way you would like. The girls can make these for their family members, friends, the primary presidency, or you can look into donating them to a cancer treatment center in your area around Valentine’s Day.

My girls loved this activity so much that we are doing them again for a Valentines crafting activity!WendyC303http://www.blogger.com/profile/13969286715622650199noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-551331218675813967.post-13793000163428300122011-01-14T16:36:00.003-07:002012-01-02T12:20:46.973-07:00My 2011 Goals

I took the opportunity to discuss New Year’s resolutions and goal making with the girls. I found this great online resource that helped me to teach and discuss goal making with a young age group:

http://www.suite101.com/content/goal-setting-lesson-plan-a11204

I used the suggestion of using the chalkboard, dividing it into two sections and had the girls list a wish and a goal. Then, we discussed how some wishes can become goals and others cannot. For instance, wishing for a new baby brother is probably not a reasonable goal; goals have to be something that we work on to improve ourselves… we cannot force goals upon someone else.

After the chalk board discussion, I had one of the older girls read Amy’s Goal from the January 2010 Friend. We talked about how some goals can be huge and sometimes overwhelming to take on, but if we work on our goal a little at a time and break it into smaller steps, almost anything is possible.

Then, I had the girls complete the following worksheet by choosing 2 goals to work on for the year: a personal goal and a spiritual goal. We discussed the basic differences between each. I also went around and helped each of the girls identify obstacles and lay out plans of action as they needed help.

My New Year's Goals Worksheet (undated)
WendyC303http://www.blogger.com/profile/13969286715622650199noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-551331218675813967.post-80203899712211885552011-01-14T16:07:00.000-07:002011-01-14T16:07:07.950-07:00UpdateHi Everyone:

My deepest apologies for not keeping up on this blog! The last 6 months have been crazy. I work full time as a marketing manager AND I started going to school full time pursuing my degree in graphic design. I’ve decided to take my class load back to part time to try to get my life back!

That being said, I hope to add quite a few posts in the coming weeks to catch you up on what we have been doing for our Activity Days here in Denver, Colorado!

I am also teaming with Andi over at www.hotpinkpansy.com for a fun Valentine’s Day Service Activity. Check back for more details soon!

As far as downloading goes, I am going to stay with Google Docs for now. I am taking a web design class this semester, so I hope to use my new found talents to improve this site as the year progresses. If you are having trouble downloading any of the documents, please email me at wactivities@gmail.com. I will be happy to email you the documents directly.

Thanks

I have been using Google Docs as my file sharing source (since it's totally free). Someone just commented that they were having trouble printing and downloading my files from Google Docs. I'd love to get your feedback... let me know if Google Docs does the job or if you've had issues as well by leaving a comment below

Also, if you have any suggestions for file sharing websites, I would be very grateful!

Thanks!

I was a little worried about this activity at first, because I thought the girls would be uninterested or even bored with the subject as a whole, but I was definitely proven wrong. This activity was the most spiritual activity we have ever had. The girls had a great time trying to pronounce the names of their grandparents and great grandparents, discovering who they were named after and realizing how long ago their some of their great grandparents were born! I was so impressed that some of the girls even knew stories about some of their family members.

Prior to the activity, I emailed this worksheet to the girls’ parents, encouraging them to fill in as much as they could, and to send the worksheet to the activity with their daughter.

We started our activity with a brief devotional from this 2005 article from the Friend:
Come Listen to a Prophet’s Voice: Your Fascinating History By President James E. Faust

We discussed how family history and temple work go hand in hand, and how we can be families forever.

First, have the girls write their name on name plate on the front page

Second, have them fill out their family tree with full names only. The numbers on the family tree correspond with the numbers on the worksheet, so the girls will know exactly where to put each name.

Third, have the girls fill out the more detailed information on the following pages (birthdates and ordinances completed). There is also room for them to write down their testimony, what they love about their parents, and what they love about their grandparents.

Challenge the girls to learn more about their great grandparents, write down a few stories on paper, and add it to their booklets.

Quick note… I only had a couple of girls that had additional step parents and grandparents that they wanted to include. I printed these blank nameplates on sticker paper so the girls could add additional family members. You can download my template here:
This was an activity that I did in May, Just as the weather was getting warmer to remind the girls to dress modestly, but really it can be done any time of year. For this activity, download My Modest Fashion Collection file via Google Docs:
My Modest Fashion Collection
Materials Needed for Activity:

A copy of “My Modest Fashion Collection” for each girl (4 Pages total)

Tracing Paper

Scissors

Crayons, pens

Yarn

Scrap Fabric, ribbon, buttons

Glue

Wiggly Eyes (optional)

Activity

First, read through the first page of the Modest Fashion Collection with the girls. I had the girls take turns reading each paragraph. We discussed big words and concepts to make sure that the girls understood modesty. I also had the girls highlight key words that they should incorporate into their fashion designs.

Next, start designing modest outfits! The Collection has 3 different looks: Swimming Suit, Casual wear and Sunday best.

The tracing paper allows the girls to draw outfits on top of the paper “models,” and then use them as patterns for cutting their fabric. They used small pieces of ribbon to create accessories like belts.

We used yarn to create fun hairstyles. My girls were so creative and came up with pony tails and braids!

Use glue to adhere the outfits and hair to the models. I used Aleeene's Orginal All-Purpose Tacky Glue

Many of the girls used crayons to color the skin and give their paper models faces.

Suggestion: Remind the girls where the knees are; my girls seemed to overlook that detail on the paper models.

Note: This activity actually took a bit longer than I expected. The girls were only able to finish 1 or two outfits. I sent my girls home with extra fabric scaps to finish their outfits.
WendyC303http://www.blogger.com/profile/13969286715622650199noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-551331218675813967.post-4148146771915291852010-09-19T21:11:00.001-06:002010-09-19T21:12:15.579-06:00Journals

I love the fall… the colors start to change, kids go back to school and there is a general excitement in the air. Another thing I love about fall… school supplies go on sale! I found these composition books on sale at Target for 25 cents each!
I decided I really couldn’t beat this deal, so I stocked up and decided that we would have an Activity Day on Journals. I based our craft on this demonstration on eHow.com.

I purchased some girly scrapbook paper at hobby lobby when it was 50% off. Then, I gathered up all of my extra stickers, buttons, and markers. I also made name labels to for the girls to add to the front of their journals (download the PDF doc below).

We started the Activity with a 15 minute discussion/devotional about journals. We asked the girls if any of them kept a journal, why we should keep a journal and things they can write in their journals. We also shared a couple of personal stories about blessing from keeping a journal. My co-leader talked to the girls about Joseph Smith and how he recorded his history. She read verses 11 – 19 from Joseph Smith History, and then bore her testimony about how she was so happy that Joseph Smith wrote those things down so that she could have a testimony of the true church.

Then we got to work on our journals! Here are a few pictures how ours turned out.
The story from the August 2010 Friend “Birthday Standards” served as the theme for this fun activity.

First, I mailed Invitations to each of the girls will the following text:

You’re Invited to an Activity Days Birthday Party!

Join us at the church on <insert date="">from <insert time="">

We will be celebrating someone very special!

Please RSVP <insert here="" information="">

I greeted each of the girls at the door and we gathered in the foyer. When all of the girls arrived, I read the story Birthday Standards.

I gave each of the girls a birthday crown (Purchased at hobby Lobby $2.49 for 6) to wear to the party. I told them that the crown should remind them that they are daughters of our heavenly father and should never be afraid to stand up for what is right, no matter the occasion. Then, I brought them into our activity room where I had the party all set up.

Piñata Craft
Like I mentioned before, I used the story from the friend as my theme. I wanted to make sure we had a piñata, so I came up with this fun and mess-free version that would allow the girls to take home their own personal piñata.

Supplies:

8 oz Styrofoam cups (purchased at grocery store $.99 for 125)

Masking Tape

Individually-wrapped candies (I purchased a HUGE value pack with Nerds, Laffy Taffy, Gobstoppers & Sweat tarts for $8.99 and had a ton left over)

Crepe-paper streamers, assortment of colors (purchased at Hobby Lobby for $.99 a roll)

Elmer’s Glue

Ribbon

Pen

Directions:

Stuff a Styrofoam cup full of candy. This is the bottom of your piñata.

With a second Styrofoam cup, use a pen to poke two holes near the bottom of the cup. Take a 15” length of ribbon and thread so that both ends of the ribbon are inside the cup. Tie a secure square knot inside the cup. This is the top of your piñata

Take a small length of a crepe-paper streamer, just enough to wrap around the piñata once. With a 40% off coupon, I paid $4.19 for this set making each gift a little over $1.00/girl.

We normally start our activities off with a short devotional, which my co-leader was in charge of this time around. She chose to share an excerpt from Elder M. Russell Ballard’s April 2010 Conference Talk Mothers & Daughters. The message was perfect for the girls:

“Look to your mother. Learn from her strengths, her courage, and her faithfulness. Listen to her. She may not be a whiz at texting; she may not even have a Facebook page. But when it comes to matters of the heart and the things of the Lord, she has a wealth of knowledge.”

Then, we all took turns saying something that we loved about our mothers.

For our activity, we made these fun Flower Pins for mom. They are super easy and very inexpensive to make.

Materials:

Long, narrow piece of fabric, approx. 1.75” X 35” (Cotton fabric is best)

Craft Thread

Large Needle

Felt

Large Bar Pin

Glue Gun

Buttons

Note: I brought a ¼ of a yard of a few different fabrics so the girls had some variety to choose from. Then, I TORE strips approximately 1 ¾ inch in length, so that the fabric had a natural fray to it.
Instructions:

Thread your needle with the craft thread, tying a knot at the end. Begin a running stitch about a ¼” into the length of your fabric strip. Continue stitching the entire length of your fabric, ultimately creating a gather.

Twirl the fabric and manipulate the gather to create a flower shape. Use the needle and thread to sew through all of the layers so that the flower shape stays put. When you achieve your desired look, tie the craft thread into a tight knot on the back and cut the excess craft thread.

Hot glue a button (or two) on the center of the flower. (you can also sew the button onto the center, but I found that it was difficult for the girls to do, given our short time)

On the back, hot glue a small piece of felt. This will cover up the raw edges and act as a stabilizer for the bar pin. Hot glue the bar pin the felt.

This project was very easy for some of the girls and more difficult for others. It really depended on their exposure to basic sewing. However, each of the girls made beautiful flowers. It was nice having two leaders. I kept the more advanced girls going, while my co-leader stayed and helped the girls that were having more difficulties.

I brought some paper and envelopes so the girls could write letters of appreciation to their mothers. It was a nice activity that gave the girls who finished early something to do.

The girls had a great time with this project and were amazed that they could create this cute flower so easily. We did it in an hour with nine girls. If I had to do it again, I would allow for an extra 15 minutes so they could help with clean-up!WendyC303http://www.blogger.com/profile/13969286715622650199noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-551331218675813967.post-33106822678690598062010-03-24T20:56:00.006-06:002010-03-26T14:58:04.307-06:00"Bee" a Great Sitter! Our Activity Day Girls were invited by our Enrichment Committee to babysit for one of our Relief Society Meetings. To prep the older girls for the challenge, I held a "Bee a Great Sitter" night, where we discussed the basics of babysitting, safety tips and fun games that the girls can play with the kids.

I derived most of my ideas from LDS Activity Day Ideas, another Activity Days Blog that I love! I used their content and put my touch on it, giving it a "Bee" theme. I found some on clearance for only 70 each. They have fun, decorative designs on them that the girls loved. They are large enough that the girls can add virtually anything to them including old sheets, dress up clothes, coloring books, etc.

Wal-Mart had some really fun folders on clearance for 25 cents each in the clearance isle. They were more colorful and durable than the plain ones I was planning on getting! I am always amazed at the cute stationary finds in the clearance section at Wal-Mart.

The Clearance isle at Wal-Mart was also great in finding items for the games that we put together. I found socks for the Sock Guessing game and misc. items for the Sink or Float game. I was amazed how little I spent on the activity!

Preparation
I made each girl a folder with one of each of the hand outs. The only files I printed in color were the Labels for the Folders and the Labels for the Games (which I printed on full-sheeted sticker paper). Black and white copies of the handouts were fine.

I purchased/found materials for the following Games:

Sock Guessing Game (1 cute sock per girl, found on clearance of course!)

Blowing Cotton Balls (6 cotton balls and a piece of twine for each girl)

Ribbon Matching (Just brought all of the spools of ribbon I had laying around my house)

We went through the Babysitting Tips and Safety First handouts together. The girls took turns reading each bullet point, and we discussed each one. I then showed them the "Important Information for Sitters" handout, and told them they could make copies and take them to each babysitting assignment they had.
Then, we spent the rest of the activity assembling the four games I had prepared. They cut out their labels and assembled all of the items for their kits.

To kick this off, I gave a brief lesson on Family Home Evening using the following articles from the Friend. I also printed copies of these articles and sent them home with the girls’ to share at their next Family Home Evening. I put it them all into a folder and labeled it “Family Home Evening Kit #1: My family can be strengthened through Family Home Evening.”

We thought that creating family home evening charts would help the girls get excited about actively participating in Family Home Evening. These FHE charts are easy to make and very flexible. They took us about an hour to complete.

Create a title for your FHE Chart. I enlisted the help of our Primary President and a mother to help with this project. We had 3 sewing machines and 1 iron. 3 of us taight the girls the basics of machine sewing, one on one, while the 4th helped the girls with the basics of ironing. It all went pretty smoothly. With 7 girls in attendance, it took exactly 2 hours to finish everything up.

Since each of us were only able to help one girl at a time while sewing and pressing, I set up a table with copies of coloring and game pages from the Friend. This gave the girls something to do while they were waiting for their lesson.

Here are a few photos from the activity:
I was amazed by the variety of things that we got: cookies, candies, cupcakes and more! I purchased four inexpensive platters and we divided all of the treats among them. While I wrapped the plates with Saran Wrap, I had the girls sign Christmas Cards for each member of our primary presidency. I made sure that they thanked them for all of the hard work that they put into our primary.

When the plates are cards were done, we loaded up in a couple of cars and delivered the plates of treats to our presidency. When we delivered them, the girls sang "We Wish You a Merry Christmas!"

We received a thank you card from one of the councilors. I read it out loud to the girls. They all were so happy and clapped after I read the card. We talk about how serving others make us happy because we are serving Jesus Christ.WendyC303http://www.blogger.com/profile/13969286715622650199noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-551331218675813967.post-76340423018470447112010-01-24T15:57:00.000-07:002010-01-24T16:15:18.377-07:00The Symbols of Christmas

For our Christmas Activity, I wanted to share something spiritual with the girls and have some fun, too. I had heard the story "Teach the Children" several times, so I Googled it and was amazed how many versions there were! I combined four versions--three I found on the internet and one that my mother had given me in a Christmas binder some years ago. I condensed a couple of things and used LDS terminology that would be familar to the girls.

I purchased tiny Christmas Trees, Ornaments (from the story) and a red fabric gift bag for each girl at a local craft shop. I waited for everything to go on sale and got most of the items for 50% off.
I placed everything in the red fabric gift bag along with a copy of the story "Teach the Children."

For our opening excercises, we shared the Christmas Story told in Luke 2. When we were done, I told the girls that I had something very exciting to tell them. Santa Claus himself had visited me last night and brought me this little bag. The younger girls were excited and in disbeleif, while the older girls just played along. I told them that Santa Claus wanted me to share something very important with them. I began reading the story. I pulled each item out of my little bag as I read the story, decorating the tree along the way. The girls had fun guessing what each ornament in the bag meant and were very interested in what Santa had shared with me. When I finished, I told the girls that Santa had left them all a bag. They were so excited to have their own little tree for their rooms. They took about 15 minutes decorating their trees and chatting more about each ornament's meaning.

It was a fantastic activity that taught the girls about the true meaning of Christmas in a fun way. I told them to take their trees home and share them with their families for Family Home Evening (which I think they all did!). I also encouraged them to save their trees and bring them out each year to remind them of the true meaning of Chirstmas.WendyC303http://www.blogger.com/profile/13969286715622650199noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-551331218675813967.post-58469067164464328062010-01-20T20:47:00.000-07:002010-01-20T20:52:10.260-07:00A Summer SaladBetty Crocker’s Summer Layered Chicken Salad is one of my all-time favorite meals. I showed the girls how to make it at one of our summer evening Activities. After teaching the girls basic washing and knife skills, I divided them up into three teams. I put each team in charge of preparing and chopping up a different ingredient for the salad: chicken breast, strawberries and lettuce. I let each of the girls help me add the ingredients for the salad. Then, I showed them how to make the homemade salad dressing. They took turns whisking it up. They were all amazed that you could make your own salad dressing at home!

We set the table, opened some store bought rolls and shared a meal together. The girls LOVED the salad and really enjoyed putting it all together. I sent them all home with the recipe to share with their families.

Note: I checked with the girls' parents to make sure I wouldn't be dealing with any food alergies. While we ate, we played a get to know you game. I started by introducing myself: “My name is Sister Clasen and I love to sew. What are some of your hobbies?” We went around the table and everyone shared their favorite hobby. Then, I had each of the girls do the same thing; state their name and ask a question for all of the girls. They had a great time learning about each other and got very excited when they found similarities! By the end of the activity, I knew all of the girls’ names, their personalities, what they enjoy doing and more!

Here are some sample get to know you questions:

What is your favorite color?

When is your birthday?

How many brothers & sisters do you have?

Do you have any pets?

What is your favorite subject in school?

What do you want to be when you grow up?

What is your favorite movie?

What is your favorite primary song?
